With the first day of the CCCAA State Championships in the books at San Diego Mesa College, the Cerritos College men's track and field team sits in 10th place with six team points. The Falcons had a third place finish on Friday, while freshman decathlete Luis Gonzalez (Bellflower HS) sits in ninth place after the first five events. The team will have nine entries and one relay team competing on the final day.
Along with Gonzalez, sophomore javelin thrower Tristian Escobar (Bell Gardens HS) competed and he earned the team their six points with a third place finish. On his first toss, Escobar cleared 52.58 meters, which turned out to be his best mark of the day. It was shy of his personal best throw of 57.00 meters, which would have put him in second place. The windy conditions at San Diego Mesa contributed to the shorter distances for all competitors.
As for Gonzalez, he has compiled 3050 points, which puts him in ninth place out of 12 competitors, but it only 85 points away from moving into fifth place. He started off the day with a solid 780 points in the 100 meters with his time of 11.37, which was the second best time. Gonzalez also did well in the long jump and collected 657 points with a leap of 6.32 meters. He trailed off in the final two events, the high jump (528 points) and 400 meters (529 points).
