Taking on a team that has given them headaches the last few times they played them, the Cerritos College women's soccer team recorded a 2-0 non-conference win over host San Diego Miramar College on Tuesday. With the win, the #1-ranked Falcons have progressively gotten better on defense since their first game, when they allowed two goals. The team will now head north to Foothill College to take on the host Owls at 1:30 p.m. on Friday. On Sunday, they will square off against Cypress College in an 11:30 a.m. game at Foothill College.

In their win over the Jets (1-1-1), Cerritos struck quickly and took a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute on a set piece. Sophomore Ashli Villalobos (Mayfair HS/Cal State Los Angeles) found the ball and sent it through to freshman Itzel Ballesteros (Maywood Academy HS), who controlled the pass and shot from outside the box and into the net.

Even with the early lead, the Falcons had to withstand several Miramar offensive attacks. Sophomore goalkeeper Ruby Nichols (Bishop Amat HS) came up with eight saves to post her first shutout of the season.

Cerritos added an insurance goal in the 80th minute when sophomore Carolina Jaramillo (Cetis 54, Mexico HS) took advantage of a bad clearing pass from Jets goalkeeper Natalie Tsepina. She played the ball and fed sophomore Amber Whitmore (Los Alamitos HS), who tapped home the pass for her third goal of the season.
