In defense of their four consecutive CCCAA State Championships, the Cerritos College women's soccer team opened the postseason with a 3-1 win over Mt. San Jacinto College on Saturday. The Falcons (20-1-0), seeded #1 for the Southern California Regional Playoffs, won their 21st consecutive postseason game, dating back to the 2011 season. The team will now host their second round game at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday against #8-seeded Moorpark College (14-4-4).
Cerritos got on the board quickly against the 16th-seeded Eagles (13-7-2), as they strung together three quick passes, with the third resulting in a goal in the fourth minute. On the play, sophomore Ashli Villalobos (Mayfair HS/Cal State Los Angeles) had the ball on the outside and sent a pass across the middle to sophomore Carolina Jaramillo (Cetis 54, Tijuana HS). Quickly spotting freshman Itzel Ballesteros (Maywood Academy HS), Jaramillo got her the ball and Ballesteros chipped the ball past Mt. San Jacinto goalkeeper Riley Ludwig.
They took that slim lead into the half, despite not allowing a shot. By contrast, the Falcons took seven shots, with Ludwig making several point blank saves to keep the score close.
In the second half, Cerritos added an insurance goal in the 63rd minute, as freshman Maria Hernandez (Sierra Vista HS) fed a lead pass to sophomore Cheyenne De Los Reyes (Santa Monica HS/Santa Monica CC). With Ludwig out to try and control the ball, De Los Reyes was able to pry the ball away and scored into an empty net, her 12th of the season.
Jaramillo scored the final goal in the 77th minute when she bent a beautiful corner kick that wrapped inside the far post past all of the defenders. It was the second corner kick goal of the season for Jaramillo and her 14th goal of the season in just 10 games.
The Eagles broke the shutout bid in the 79th minute when a loose ball off a corner kick landed in front of Destiny Blythe, who scored past sophomore goalkeeper Ruby Nichols (Bishop Amat HS).
