The duo of Katherine Gabayeron (Cerritos HS) and Raquel Gabayeron (Cerritos HS) combined to finish first in a race, third in two races and fourth in two more at the Golden West Invitational on Friday. They also teamed up in four relay races and helped the Falcons finish in third place out of eight schools with 924.5 team points. The Falcons will now host El Camino College and Long Beach City College on Friday at 12:30 p.m. in their South Coast Conference opener.

Sophomore Katherine Gabayeron won the 500-yard freestyle by six seconds over her closest competitor with a time of 5:22.95, while her time of 2:07.62 in the 200-yard freestyle earned her a fourth place finish. As for freshman Raquel Gabayeron, her time of 1:04.95 put her in third place in the 100-yard butterfly, while she finished the 100-yard IM in a time of 1:07.84, which earned her a fifth place finish.The two finished in third and fourth in the 200-yard IM, with Katherine posting a time of 2:22.35 and Raquel finished in 2:22.96.

In relay competition, the quartet of freshman Carla Harvey (Potomac Falls, VA HS), the Gabayerons and freshman Angela Covarrubias (Paramount HS) took fourth place in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 2:05.43, while Covarrubias, both Gabayerons and sophomore Yuridia Vela (Schurr HS) placed sixth in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:50.99. That same foursome came in sixth place in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 4:36.91, while they earned a seventh place in the 400-yard freestyle relay by finishing in 4:14.67.

Other strong performances were turned in by sophomore Sharon Ku (Cerritos HS), who came in sixth in the 50-yard breaststroke in 35.94, while freshman Teresa Zuniga (California HS) was eighth in 38.27. Covarrubias finished in eighth in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 27.70, while Zuniga was eighth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:24.27). Harvey posted a time of 1:08.94 to come in eighth in the 100-yard backstroke and she was also eighth in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:10.57 and Vela was eighth in the 50-yard backstroke (32.72).
