The Cerritos College women's swimming team recorded another win and added to a second place to help them secure second place at the South Coast Conference Championships, which were held at Chaffey College. The Falcons finished with 591.5 team points and just missed out on overtaking the host Panthers, who won the championship with 618 points. Next up for the team will be the State Championships, which will be held at East Los Angeles College from Thursday through Saturday.
Freshman Raquel Gabayeron (Cerritos HS), who set a school record in winning the 100-yard IM on the first day, added a conference championship in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 59.39. Also earning big points for the team were freshmen Carla Harvey (Potomac Falls, VA HS), who came in fourth place at 1:04.66 and Milena Hernandez (Cerritos HS), whose time of 1:06.41 put her in fifth place. Harvey also added a second place finish in the 100-yard backstroke with her time of 1:01.29, which is edging closer to the school record time of 1:00.95, set by Stephanie Rosero in 2009. Sophomore Yuridia Vela (Schurr HS) placed eighth in the event at 1:08.54, while sophomore Janine Loera (Paramount HS) was in ninth at 1:06.41.
In the 100-yard breaststroke, freshman Teresa Zuniga (California HS) earned a fifth place time at 1:15.93, with freshman Sharon Ku (Cerritos HS) coming in seventh place in 1:16.89. The meet ended with the 400-yard freestyle relay team of freshman Katherine Gabayeron (Cerritos HS), Raquel Gabayeron, Harvey and Hernandez touching up in 3:46.71 to finish in third place.
