With five events completed at the South Coast Conference Championships, the Cerritos College women's swimming team is currently in first place with 197 team points. The Falcons, who are swimming at Chaffey College, will look to improve on their four-point lead over the second place host Panthers on Friday at 10:00 a.m. with seven more events taking place. On the day, Cerritos set a pair of school records in taking their lead.

In helping the team take a first day lead was a school record time by the 200-yard freestyle relay team. The quartet of sophomore Katherine Gabayeron (Cerritos HS), freshman Milena Hernandez (Cerritos HS), freshman Raquel Gabayeron (Cerritos HS) and freshman Angela Covarrubias (Paramount HS) posted a time of 1:42.11, which put them in second place behind Pasadena City College in the conference championships. But the time broke the old school record of 1:42.72, which was set in 2010 by Jessica Ku, Kristen Nepi, Angie Silva and Natalie Peng.

In the other relay event that  was held, the Falcons turned in a second place time of 4:09.34 in the 400-medley relay, and once again trailed the Lancers. Both second place finishes earned the team 34 points in the standings. The foursome consisted of freshman Carla Harvey (Potomac Falls, VA HS), the Gabayeron sisters and Covarrubias.

In individual races, Raquel Gabayeron established a new school record in the 100-yard IM to win the conference championship in the event. Her time of 1:01.21 broke the record of Natalie Peng, when she swam the race in 1:02.53 back in 2009. Sophomore Janine Loera (Paramount HS) took sixth in the race in 1:01.17, while Covarrubias placed seventh with a time of 1:07.22 Katherine Gabayeron finished in second place in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:13.80, which was just five seconds off her school record time that she set last year. Hernandez shaved over two seconds off her 50-yard freestyle time to come in fourth place at 25.74, with Covarrubias posting a time of 26.65 to finish in eighth place.
