W. Swimming: Cerritos takes second place at conference pentathlon

Several strong performances by the Cerritos College women's swimming team helped them finish in second place at the East LA Pentathlon on Friday. The Falcons finished with 247.5 points to come in second place out of the seven teams, and trailed only Pasadena City College, who won the meet with 286.5 points. The team will now compete in the Golden West Invitational on Friday, while the divers will be at Mt. San Antonio College on the same day.

Sophomore Katherine Gabayeron (Cerritos HS) was joined by her sister, freshman Raquel Gabayeron (Cerritos HS) to lead the way for Cerritos. Katherine Gabayeron finished in third place in the 50-yard breaststroke out of 90 entries in the 50-yard breaststroke with a time of 34.29, while her clocking of 57.77 in the 100-yard freestyle earned her a sixth place finish. As for Raquel Gabayeron, she led the way in the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 28.54 to come in fourth place, while her time of 1:05.38 put her in third place in the 100-yard IM.

Freshman Carla Harvey (Potomac Falls, VA HS) was a strong fourth place in the 50-yard backstroke in a time of 30.95, with Raquel Gabayeron right behind in fifth place at 31.05. Raquel Gabayeron also placed sixth in the 50-yard breaststroke in 34.68, while sophomore Sharon Ku (Cerritos HS) was ninth in 36.56 and Harvey took 10th in 36.80. Sophomore Yuridia Vela (Schurr HS) came in 10th place in the 50-yard butterfly at 29.79, with Katherine Gabayeron a close fifth place in the 100-yard IM in a time of 1:05.90.
