The Cerritos College women's swimming team competed in five events on the second day of the CCCAA State Championships at East Los Angeles College on Friday. The team's production moved the Falcons into 10th place with 88.5 team points and hold a slim lead over American River College, who sit in 11th place with 83 points. On the final day of the championships, Cerritos will be competing in two individual races and one relay race.

Swimming in three events on the day was sophomore Katherine Gabayeron (Cerritos HS), who picked up a sixth place finish in the 200-yard IM, a ninth place in the 200-yard freestyle and swam the second leg of the 200-yard medley relay that finished in ninth place.

In the 200-yard IM, Gabayeron recorded a time of 2:13.93, which was less than a second off her school record time she set at last year's state championship. Her clocking of 1:56.92 won the consolation race and her time would have put her in fifth place if she qualified for the championship race. Joining freshmen Carla Harvey (Potomac Falls, VA HS), Raquel Gabayeron (Cerritos HS) and Angela Covarrubias (Paramount HS), they registered a time of 1:52.87, which also won the consolation championship race. That time was also .06 second shy of matching their school record time that was set at last week's conference championships.

Also swimming in an individual race was Raquel Gabayeron, who finished in 11th place in the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 27.01, while Harvey recorded a clocking of 28.87, which put her in 15th place and was also close to breaking a school record.
