At the South Coast Conference Prelims on Tuesday, the Cerritos College men's track and field team compiled 21 points with five events completed. The Falcons, who are providing the facility for the event, sit in third place with the championship set for Saturday.

Sophomore thrower Micah Norfles (Marina HS) earned 10 of those points by winning the hammer throw with a distance of 50.92 meters. It's the second year in a row that Norfles won the conference championship in the hammer. The Falcons picked up 17 of their team points in that event, with freshman Daniel Chavez (Los Alamitos HS) placing fifth with a throw of 37.84 meters that earned four teams points. The duo of freshmen Nasser Brown (Long Beach Millikan HS) and Joseph Medina (Bell Gardens HS) came in seventh (35.33 meters) and eighth (34.49 meters) places, respectively.

Also scoring points for Cerritos was Brown in the javelin, as his best throw of 40.43 meters put him in sixth place, while sophomore Bryce Pearson (Bellflower HS) took eighth place at 39.63 meters.

Of the prelim events that took place, sophomore Colby Owens (Milford Mill Academy, MD HS) came in first place in the 400 meters at 48.10, while his time of 21.66 was good enough for second place in the 200 meters. Sophomore LaVelle Sowell (Carson HS) took fourth place in the 200 meters (21.88) and sixth in the 100 meters (10.70) to advance to the championships.

The duo of sophomores Joe Munoz (Long Beach Jordan HS) and Jose Garcia Chavez (Norwalk HS) came in fifth and sixth places in times of 4:16.92 and 4:18.61 to qualify for the championships, with Pearson also placing fourth in the 400-meter IH in a time of 56.45. In other running events, sophomore sprinter Jaheim Williams (Compton HS) finished in fifth place in a time of 10.67.
