The Cerritos College women's basketball team won two of their three games in their first tournament of the season. The Falcons (2-1), playing in the Earning Our Stripes Tournament at Riversde City College over the weekend, dropped their first game to Barstow College, 54-50, but responded with wins against Glendale College (72-62) and Grossmont College (57-40) for the consolation championship. The team will now compete in the Mt. San Jacinto Tournament and open with a 2:00 p.m. game with Antelope Valley College on Friday.

Cerritos vs. Barstow: Leading by as many as 11 points (24-13) in the first half and eight points (43-35) with 9:09 left in the second half, the Falcons saw the Vikings work their way back into the game. Barstow took their first lead (47-45) with 4:24 remaining and the Falcons made just two of their final six shots, while turning the ball over three times in the loss. Freshman Aissha Baldwin (Mayfair HS) led the team with 13 points and 12 rebounds, while sophomore Cassidy Carrillo (St. Paul HS) finished with 10 points. The game had a combined 62 turnovers, while Cerritos was just 2-for-11 from the free throw line.

Cerritos vs. Glendale: Still struggling with their turnovers, the Falcons came out of the gate netting a pair of three-pointers to take a quick 6-0 lead. It was a 10-0 advantage before the Vaqueros finally got on the board, with Cerritos leading from start to finish. Baldwin continued to lead the team in points (16) and rebounds (13), with sophomore guard Shonnell Hoyt (St. Anthony HS/Biola University) contributing 14 points, which included four three-pointers. Off the bench, sophomore Selena Romero (Lakewood HS) scored eight points, while freshmen Kennedi Cooper (Lakewood HS) and Crystal Lomax (Lynwood HS) each pulled down five rebounds.

Cerritos vs. Grossmont: Hoyt earned All-Tournament honors after finishing with eight points in the win over the Griffins. Freshman Sydney Lopez (Whittier Christian HS) came off the bench to lead the team with 11 points and added six rebounds, while 10 different players scored for the Falcons. After a close 24-22 first half, Cerritos turned a 34-29 deficit into a 57-40 win by converting 16-of-26 free throws, with Lopez converting 7-of-8. Carrillo also scored eight points in the win, while freshman Miranda Valentin (Bellflower HS) added seven points off the bench.
