W. Basketball: Falcons sweep their way to West Hills Tourney title

With three straight wins over the weekend, the Cerritos College women's basketball captured the championship of the West Hills Tournament. The Falcons (9-5) opened with a win over Napa Valley College (53-47) and then dispatched Fresno City College (74-65) in the semifiinals before winning the title with a 57-52 win over the host Golden Eagles. The team will now compete in the Fullerton Tournament starting on December 27 and face Skyline College in the first game.

Cerritos vs. Napa: It was a tight game from start to finish for the Falcons, who received 14 points from tournament Most Valuable Player Cassidy Carrillo (St. Paul HS). Freshman Sydney Lopez (Whittier Christian HS) provided 10 points off the bench, while all-tournament selection Ashley Flores (California HS) pulled down nine rebounds and added six points in a supporting role. As a team, Cerritos shot only 30% from the field, but received points from nine different players, including 21 points and 22 rebounds from the bench.

Cerritos vs. Fresno City: Freshman Aissa Baldwin (Mayfair HS) dominated the board with 16 rebounds to go along with her team-high 13 points. The Falcons received double-digit scoring from four players, with Carrillo and freshman Kennedi Cooper (Lakewood HS) each posting 11 points and freshman Verenice Gomez (Whittier HS) finishing with 10 points. Carrillo (eight) and Cooper (six) helped the team out-rebound the Rams, 51-35, with Lopez and sophomore Selena Romero (Lakewood HS) each adding nine points in a winning cause.

Cerritos vs. West Hills-Lemoore: In the championship game, Carrillo earned her MVP award by pouring in 20 points, with four three-pointers, as the Falcons won the title. Baldwin continued to control things with another double-double performance. Along with her 12 points, Baldwin pulled down 17 rebounds, while Flores provided eight points and seven caroms off the bench. Gomez finished with nine points and four rebounds before fouling out, with Romero chipping in with six rebounds.
