W. Basketball: Cerritos wins second consolation title

After their first two tournaments of the season, the Cerritos College women's basketball team has rebounded from a first round loss to win their next two games. The end result is a pair of consolation championships, with the most recent being at the Mt. San Jacinto Tournament over the weekend. The Falcons (4-2) were edged by Antelope Valley College, 58-55 in the first round, but came back the second day to hand Chaffey College a 60-30 setback. The team earned the consolation title with their 94-51 win over Victor Valley College. Cerritos will now get some time off before they travel north to play in the College of the Sequoias Tournament on December 4, where they will open with San Joaquin Delta College.

Cerritos vs. Antelope Valley: Trailing from the outset, the Falcons stayed close with the Marauders until the end. It was a 54-52 Antelope Valley lead with 2:42 after freshman Aissha Baldwin (Mayfair HS) scored. After both teams traded missed baskets, a pair of AVC free throws put them up by four points, 56-52 with 1:18 remaining. Cerritos missed two straight shots until sophomore Cassidy Carrillo (St. Paul HS) was fouled attempting a three-pointer with :14 seconds left. She hit all three to get the team to within 56-55, but Shekinah Broadway converted both of her free throws and when the Falcons missed their last shot, it left them with the loss. Baldwin led the team with 15 points and 18 rebounds, while sophomore Selena Romero (Lakewood HS) added 11 points off the bench. Freshman Clarissa Hernandez (St. Paul HS) finished added six points, with the Falcons receiving 28 points off the bench.

Cerritos vs. Chaffey: The Falcons opened up a 6-0 lead to start the game and were leading, 31-16 lead at halftime. A deep bench contributed 35 points and 34 rebounds with the tandem of Verenice Gomez (Whittier HS) and Sydney Lopez (Whittier Christian HS) accounting for 11 and 10 points, respectively. Gomez made 3-of-5 three pointers. Hernandez and freshman Janel Oliver (Bellflower HS) each scored eight points, while Baldwin, Oliver and freshman Miranda Valentin (Bellflower HS) all finished with six rebounds.

Cerritos vs. Victor Valley: The team came out on fire against the Rams, as they broke a 4-4 tie and led, 44-10 with 5:45 left in the first half. They ended the first half with a 58-16 lead. Carrillo had the hot hand, netting five three-pointers and finished the game with a career-high 26 points, along with eight rebounds. Flores posted a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds (10 offensive), while Romero has 12 points and eight rebounds off the bench. Freshman Crystal Lomax (Lynwood HS) scored eight points off the bench, with sophomore Shonnell Hoyt (St. Anthony HS/Biola University) dishing out 10 assists to go along with her seven points.
