W. Basketball: Alexis Clark posts double-double in win

Led by freshman Alexis Clark (Mayfair HS), who recorded a double-double, the Cerritos College women's basketball team posted a 71-58 win over host ECC Compton Center on Friday. The South Coast Conference South Division win improves the Falcons record to 8-16 overall and 3-3 in the division. The team will host Los Angeles Southwest College at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

Clark did most of her damage in the fourth quarter, accounting for 13 of her 21 points and five of her 12 rebounds in the final 10 minutes, as Cerritos continued to pull away from the Lady Tartars (7-15, 1-5).

The Falcons trailed, 23-22 after the first quarter and were down, 28-22 with 5:51 remaining in the first half. Clark scored the next four points, with freshman Crystal Rodriguez (El Rancho HS) hitting a jumper to tie the game at 28-28. Down 32-30, Rodriguez connected on a three-pointer for the lead. They held that lead until 7:17 left in the third quarter when Compton went back on top, 38-37.

Consecutive layups by freshman Mele Valele (Norwalk HS), Clark and freshman Christina Mina (Bellflower HS) started a 12-0 Falcon run that was capped by a three-pointer from sophomore Kaylyn James (Lakewood HS) with 3:53 remaining in the third quarter. Cerritos would maintain the lead the rest of the game.

In addition to Clark's 21 points and 12 rebounds, the Falcons received 18 points, six rebounds and four assists from James, with Rodriguez coming off the bench to add 17 points and 10 caroms. Freshman Angie Ferreira (Long Beach Millikan HS) was good for 10 points, five rebounds and three assists, while the team hit 44% of their shots on the night.
