W. Basketball: Falcons win one of three at tournament

In their first game at the Coast Christmas Classic, the Cerritos College women's basketball team opened with a win over Ventura College, 64-52. However, after that, the Falcons (10-6) dropped their next two games to come in fourth place at the tournament held at Orange Coast College. The team suffered a 62-57 loss to Chaffey College in the semifinals, and then fell, 74-65 in the third place game to College of the Canyons. The team will compete in their final tournament of the season next week when they open against Skyline College at the Fullerton Tournament.

Cerritos vs. Ventura: Winning their first game against the Pirates since the 2011-12 season, the Falcons received balanced scoring from four players who scored in double figures. After falling behind, 5-0 to start the game, and 20-12 after the first quarter, Cerritos went on a 10-2 run to start the second quarter and knot the game at 22-22 with 4:16 left in the first half. Sophomore Angie Ferreira (Long Beach Millikan HS) drained a three-pointer with 3:51 left to give the team their first lead of the game, 25-22. Freshman Serena Rendon (Carson HS) followed with another three-pointer, while sophomore Alexis Clark (Mayfair HS) and Rendon added buckets to complete a 20-2 rally that put the team in front, 32-22. Taking a 36-24 lead into halftime, thanks to a 22-4 second quarter, the Falcons saw the lead get dwindled down to 53-50 with 4:00 minutes left in the game. But Ferreira responded with a three-point dagger that propelled the team to the win. Rendon led the team with 15 points, while Ferreira (four assists) and Clark (10 rebounds) each posted 14 points. Coming off the bench, freshman Jesenia Rendon (Carson HS) contributed 12 points, six rebounds and four assists.

Cerritos vs. Chaffey: In a game that was close heading into the fourth quarter, the Panthers were able to pull ahead for a 12-point advantage with 3:28 left on the clock. The Falcons fought back to get to within four points, but were unable to even things up. Cerritos was led by Jesenia Rendon and her 18 points, along with four assists, while twin sister Serena Rendon posted 11 points and six boards. Off the bench, freshman Gillian Yamasaki (South Torrance HS) accounted for nine points, while Ferreira finished with seven points. Also contributing off the bench, freshman Carolina Cuevas (Legacy HS) recorded five points and five rebounds, with Clark finishing with five points, six rebounds and four steals.

Cerritos vs. College of the Canyons: Fighting from behind the majority of the game, the Falcons eventually ran out of gas in the fourth quarter and were outscored, 21-9 in the final 10 minutes. Down by 11 points in the second quarter, Cerritos was able to pull to within 34-33 at halftime and finally took the lead at 44-43 in the third quarter after a Serena Rendon layup with 6:30 left. A three-pointer by Serena Rendon gave the team their largest lead of the game at 50-46, while freshman Paola Torres (Santa Fe HS) netted a three-pointer late in the quarter to give the team a 56-53 advantage heading into the fourth quarter. Serena Rendon opened the fourth quarter with a three-pointer for a 59-53 lead, but five minutes later, the Cougars took a 64-63 lead. The Falcons regained the lead for the final time, as the team went 0-for-2 with three turnovers for the final 3:45. Clark, who was named All-Tournament, finished with 15 points and six rebounds, while Serena Rendon would lead all scorers with 23 points and a trio of three-pointers. Ferreira added 11 points, while Cuevas pulled down six rebounds off the bench.
