The Cerritos College women's basketball season came to an end Saturday night after their 84-58 Southern California Regional 2nd Round Playoff loss at Palomar College. The Falcons (18-14), seeded #17, advanced to the second round after defeating #16-seeded Antelope Valley College on Wednesday night. Facing the #1-seeded Comets (28-1), the team didn't have enough firepower to post the upset.
Playing a very tough first quarter, Cerritos was tied, 15-15 after freshman Serena Rendon (Carson HS) converted a pair of free throws with 4:09 left on the clock. But Palomar went on a 16-0 run over the next 5:14, as the Falcons went cold from the field. During that time, they were 0-for-4 from the field with eight turnovers. The Comets used their size advantage and outside shooting to pull ahead and never look back. Palomar attemped 47 three-points on the night and converted 14 of them. They attempted 30 more shots than the Falcons.
Rendon, who returned to the lineup after missing the game against Antelope Valley, led all scorers with 25 points. But once you remove the 7-for-14 shooting by Rendon, the remainder of the team shot a collective 13-for-38, while the Falcons were out-rebounded 52-36, with the Comets pulling down 23 offensive rebounds. Cerritos also played without freshman guard Jessica Gomez (Legacy HS), who accounted for four points and six rebounds in the playoff opener.
Playing well for the Falcons off the bench was freshman Carolina Cuevas (Legacy HS), who posted 11 points and seven rebounds, while freshman Jesenia Rendon (Carson HS) added seven points, three rebounds and a team-high four assists.
