In their second tournament of the season, the Cerritos College women's basketball team defeated three teams over the weekend to capture the championship of the San Diego City Tournament.  They opened with a 72-55 win over Southwestern College and then defeated Cuesta College, 80-48 to reach the finals. Taking on MiraCosta College for the second time this season, the Falcons defeated the Spartans, 86-65 in the finals. It's the first tournament title for the Falcons (6-2) since the 2014-15 season when they won the West Hills-Lemoore Tournament. The team will now host Rio Hondo College at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

Cerritos vs. Southwestern: In their opening game, the Falcons jumped out to an early lead against the Jaguars and never looked back, posting a 17-point win. Cerritos scored 10 of the game's first 11 points and received first quarter three-pointers from sophomore Angie Ferreira (Long Beach Millikan HS) and freshman Serena Rendon (Carson HS), who would go on to be named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Leading just 24-21 in the second quarter, freshman Miranda Ta'amu (Los Alamitos HS) converted a pair of free throws and then a three-point play to increase the lead to 29-21, as the team took a 38-27 lead into halftime. The Jaguars got within seven points of Cerritos, but the scoring of Rendon (19 points), Ferreira (10 points) and freshman Carolina Cuevas (Legacy HS), who added 10 points and 12 rebounds off the bench, was too much to overcome. Rendon converted five of the team's nine three-pointers, with Ta'amu (nine points and five rebounds) along with freshman Jessica Gomez (Legacy HS), who contributed eight points, six assists and four rebounds, also playing well.

Cerritos vs. Cuesta: The semifinal game against the Cougars saw the Falcons continue their fast start, as they extended a 23-11 first quarter leading into a 53-18 advantage at halftime. Ferreira drained a trio of three-pointers in the first quarter to get Cerritos started and then added two more in the second quarter. Rendon also netted a pair from long range in the second quarter. Cerritos also controlled the offensive boards, pulling down 23 on the night, while they out-rebounded Cuesta, 52-39. By the end of the game, all 10 players got on the scoreboard and also recorded at least one rebound. Rendon led the team with 17 points and nine rebounds, along with five assists, with Ferreria accounting for 13 points and eight assists. The bench combined to add 27 points and 20 rebounds, led by sophomore Alexis Clark (Mayfair HS), who had eight points and nine rebounds.

Cerritos vs. MiraCosta: The season started with the Falcons defeating the Spartans, 78-73 and followed that meeting with a convincing 86-65 win in the tournament championship game. Freshman Jesenia Rendon (Carson HS), who also earned All-Tournament honors, posted 18 points, 10 assists and five rebounds, with Serena Rendon acquiring all 24 of her points from three-point range, as she connected on 8-of-13 to go with six rebounds and five assists. Cuevas (five rebounds) and Gomez both added 11 points, with Ta'amu pulling down 11 rebounds and producing seven points.
