W. Track & Field: Team wins two events at Beach Invitational

The Cerritos College women's track and field team won two events at the Beach Invitational, which was held at Falcon Stadium on Saturday. Community colleges from Southern California, along with several four-year universities took part in the invitational, with the Falcons turning in several strong performances. Leading the way were freshman Alexus Dalton (Long Beach Poly HS), who won the high jump, while sophomore Tiffany Gray (El Dorado HS) captured the shot put. Cerritos will now compete in a four-team meet at Mt. San Antonio College along with American River College and Sacramento City College on Friday, while part of the squad will travel to Cal State Fullerton on Friday and Saturday for the Ben Brown Invitational.

Dalton cleared a personal best 1.70 meters to win the event, which is also the second-best height in school history. Last week, Daton cleared 1.69 meters at the Mt. San Antonio Heptathlon, as she set a new school record with 4799 points. Gray turned in a distance of 13.02 meters to beat out the rest of the field, with sophomore teammate Tuki Sauvao (Artesia HS) in seventh place at 11.93 meters. In the long jump. Dalton finished in seventh place with a leap of 5.49 meters in the long jump and placed sixth in the javelin with a throw of 31.55 meters. Sophomore Angel Sifuentes (Central Union HS), the defending javelin state champion, placed second with a distance of 40.09 meters, while freshman Kelly Magana (Cantwell HS) came in fourth place at 35.83 meters. In the triple jump, sophomore Justina Cummings (Westchester HS) came in third place with a leap of 11.05 meters.

In running events, freshman Nashay Shaw (Washington Prep HS) came in ninth place in the 100 meters with a time of 12.62, while sophomore Erin Reid (Long Beach Poly HS) was right behind in 10th place at 12.65. Cummings was clocked in 1:00.91 to finish in eighth place in the 400 meters, while freshman Maira Solis (Roosevelt HS) came in fifth place in the 800 meters with a time of 2:24.73. Sophomore teammate Amber Greer (Palisades HS/ECC Compton Center) won her flight in 2:31.79, which put her in seventh place overall.

Sifuentes (15.99) and Sauvao (16.02) and ran the 100-meter HH and came in fourth and fifth place, respectively, while freshman Stephanie Grant (Bellflower HS) was ninth in 17.38. In the 1600-meter relay, the quartet of Sifuentes, freshman Kierra Miller (Carson HS), Greer and Dalton posted a time of 4:04.34, which put them in fourth place.
