Cerritos College freshman track and field athlete Alexus Dalton (Long Beach Poly HS) recorded the best showing in five of the seven events at the Southern California Heptathlon Championships at Cerritos College on Tuesday and Wednesday, which resulted in a school record 5111 points and the championship. The top six finishers advance to the California Community College Athletic Association State Championships, which will be held at San Mateo College on May 17-18. Joining Dalton at the state championships will be sophomore Angel Sifuentes (Central Union HS), who finished in third place with 4445 points, which is also the third most points in school history. Missing out on advancing was sophomore Tuki Sauvao (Artesia HS), who placed ninth out of the 22 competitors with 4051 points. Dalton's point total broke the record amount of 4799 she set in her first-ever heptathlon earlier in the season.

Heading into the final event of the two-day event, Dalton actually trailed San Bernardino Valley College's Shanice Stewart. But in the 800 meters, Dalton posted the fastest time of 2:28.68 to earn 710 points, with Stewart running a 3:06.97 and wound up 399 points behind Dalton in the total point standings. As for Sifuentes, she ran a 2:32.29, which was the seventh fastest time, but it allowed her to maintain her third place overall finish.

Alexus Dalton (long jumping) won the Southern California Heptathlon Championship On the first day, Dalton won both the high jump (1.75 meters) and 200 meters (25.22), while her 100-meter HH time of 14.53 was the second fastest. However, she still trailed Stewart 3240-3201 with three events left on Wednesday. Dalton pulled ahead with her long jump of 5.85 meters, and despite her 14th place in the javelin, had enough left to recorded the fastest 800 meters. This is the first year Dalton has competed in the heptathlon and had never thrown the shot put or javelin before, which were her two weakest events.

As for Sifuentes, the defending state champion in the javelin, she posted the second best toss of 35.06 meters, while she also had a trio of fourth place finishes on the first day. She posted a time of 15.84 in the 100-meter HH and threw the shot put 10.13 meters, while her high jump of 1.54 meters earned her a three-way tie for fourth place. Only Sauvao bested Sifuentes, the school record holder, in the javelin, as she recorded a toss of 38.12 meters. Earlier in the season, Sauvao registered the third base javelin distance in school history.
