W. Track & Field: Team continues to excel in multiple events

Getting more and more experience as the season progresses, the Cerritos College women's track and field team continues to show their depth in multiple events. Over the weekend, the Falcons won two events at the Pasadena Games and also flooded the throwing events with as many as 12 entries in an event. The team will be sending a large group to the Antelope Valley Invitational on Saturday, and will also enter several competitors in the Stanford Invitational.

In the 4x1600-meter relay event, the quartet of Maira Solis (Roosevelt HS), Kathia Avila (Cerritos HS), Kaela Crone (Kennedy HS) and Karina Sanchez (Warren HS) recorded a time of 22:16.18 to come in first place. The college's other first place finish on the day came from freshman Amineh Beltran (Warren HS), who posted a time of 11:59.40 to win the 3000 meter steeplechase, while freshman Patricia Hurley (Mark Keppel HS) was a close third place in 12:07.10.

A pair of strong  finishes highlighted the throwing events, with sophomore Tiffany Gray (El Dorado HS) recording a distance of 12.58 meters in the shot put to come in fourth place and trailed only three Division I athletes. Sophomore Larrisha Fields (Lakewood HS) came in sixth place at 11.96 meters, with sophomore Tuki Sauvao (Artesia HS) recording a distance of 11.26 meters to finish in eighth place. Sauvao ended up in third place in the discus with a personal best throw of 42.64 meters, which is the fifth best distance in school history. Fields placed seventh at 39.62 meters, easily her best throw of her career.

In the javelin, freshman Kelly Magana (Cantwell HS) turned in a personal best throw of 34.54 meters to place fourth, with freshman teammate Alexus Dalton (Long Beach Poly HS) turning in a season best distance of 33.08 meters to take fifth place. Freshman Kierra Miller (Carson HS) came in fifth place in the triple jump at 11.40 meters, while sophomore Erin Reid (Long Beach Poly HS) long jumped 5.35 meters to take eighth place. Reid also recorded a personal best time of 25.94 meters to come in 21st place in the 200 meters.

Avila also ran the 1500 meters and finished in ninth place with a time of 5:03.14, while freshman Isabel Medina (Paramount HS) saw her time of 19:18.49 put her in fifth place in the 5000 meters. Dalton also posted the best community college time in the 100-meter HH at 14.97 to come in 16th place.
