W. Track & Field: Great weekend for the Falcon track team

The Cerritos College women's track and field team had a great weekend at both the Stanford Invitational and Antelope Valley Invitational. At Palo Alto, freshman Alexus Dalton (Long Beach Poly HS) won both of her events and set a school record in the high jump, while the majority of the team easily won the Antelope Valley Invitational by winning four field events and compiled 230 team points. Of those points, 161 of them came as a result of the field event success. This Friday, the team will take part in the Orange Coast Invitational and then travel to Sacramento to compete in the American River Invitational.

Dalton broke the 31-year old record of 1.73 meters by Deon Villa by clearing 1.76 meters and defeated a field of Division I athletes. She cleared the height on her last attempt and defeated Grace Beaudoin of the University of California to win the event. She attempted 1.79 meters, but failed on all three of her attempts. Dalton also won the long jump with a distance of 5.89 meters on her second attempt, which was the only successful one. It was just enough to edge Tamile Get-Brazzel of Tulane University for first place.

Also competing at Stanford was freshman Kierra Miller (Carson HS), who turned in the third best triple jump in school history with a distance of 11.80 meters, which put her in fourth place overall. Additionally, Miller finished 11th in the long jump (5.03 meters), while sophomore Justina Cummings (Westchester HS) triple jumped 11.26 meters to come in 10th place. Sophomore Angel Sifuentes (Central Union HS) was entered in the javelin and recorded a toss of 33.18 meters to come in ninth place. The four Falcons combined to run the 4x400-meter relay and finished 14th in a time of 4:02.51.

The dominance Cerritos had at the Antelope Valley Invtational was evident by their number of entries in each event. The team finished first through fifth in the hammer, while six of the top eight entries in the discus were Falcons and five of the top eight finishers were also teammates in the shot put.

Freshman Dorienne Ordaz (Bravo HS) won the hammer with a distance of 44.68 meters and just edged sophomore Aisha Diakite (El Rancho HS), who placed second at 44.45 meters. Sophomores Carissa English (Marina HS), who placed third at 41.34, was followed by Larrisha Fields (Lakewood HS) at 38.64 meters and Veronica Sosa (Warren HS) at 36.48 meters. Fields won the discus at 39.41 meters and was followed by sophomore Tuki Sauvao (Artesia HS) in second place with a throw of 37.85 meters and sophomore Tiffany Gray (El Dorado HS) in third place with a distance of 34.38. Also scoring points were English in fifth place (32.77 meters), Ordaz in sixth place (32.40 meters) and Diakite in eighth place at 29.70 meters.

Gray picked up a first place finish in the shot put (12.73 meters), while Sauvao (12.09 meters) came in second place and Fields (10.71 meters) came in fifth place. Sauvao captured the javelin with a distance of 35.39 meters while freshman Kelly Magana (Cantwell HS) placed third in 33.57 meters. Freshman Stephanie Grant (Bellflower HS) turned in a high jump of 1.44 meters to come in third place, while her pole vault of 2.45 meters earned her a second place with freshman Brenda Rivas (Garfield HS) taking third place.

Sophomore Erin Reid (Long Beach Poly HS) recorded a long jump distance of 5.64 meters to take second place, with Grant coming in fourth in the long jump (5.19 meters) and sophomore Amber Greer (Palisades HS) recording a third place distance of 10.35 meters in the triple jump. Reid ran the 200 meters in 26.86 seconds to earn a fourth place finish, with freshman Maira Solis (Roosevelt HS) coming in fifth in the 800 meters at 2:21.05. Freshman Karina Sanchez (Warren HS) posted a seventh place time in the 800 meters (2:30.44), while her clocking of 5:00.31 put her in fourth place in the 1500 meters. She edged out teammate Amineh Beltran (Warren HS), who came in fifth place in 5:07.54.

Freshman Kathia Avila (Cerritos HS) won the 5000 meters in a time of 19:08.41, while sophomore Khadijah Hall (Gahr HS) came in fourth in the 100-meter HH in 15.79 and Greer was third in the 400-meter IH in 1:05.51.
