W. Track & Field: Split squads turn in fine performances

With the Cerritos College track and field team splitting their squad over the weekend, the team saw several strong performances at both the Cal State Northridge Invitational and Santa Barbara Invitational. It was primarily runners that competed at Northrdge, while field events athletes were in Santa Barbara. This weekend, the team will take part in the Pasadena Games.

Sophomore Amber Greer (Palisades HS/ECC Compton Center HS) turned in a personal best time in the 400-meter IH with a time of 1:05.85 to place third at Cal State Northridge, with teammates La China Bellamy (Narbonne HS) and Lakisha McGowen (Lynwood HS) finished in ninth and 10th places, respectively.

In the sprints, sophomore Khadijah Hall (Gahr HS) recorded a time of 12.89 in the 100 meters to finish in 15th place out of 56 competitors, while sophomore Erin Reid (Long Beach Poly HS) posted a time of 12.96 to take 19th place. The 400-meter relay team of Stephanie Grant (Bellflower HS), Greer, Reid and Hall turned in a seventh place time of 49.13. Reid also competed in the long jump and came in eighth place with a distance of 16' 7", while sophomore Justina Cummings (Westchester HS) turned in a sixth place triple jump distance of 36' 4 1/4".

The Falcons dominated the Santa Barbara Invitational, as they won four field events and had as many as nine entries in several of them. In the long jump, freshman Alexus Dalton (Long Beach Poly HS) captured event with a distance of 5.49 meters, while sophomore Tiffany Gray (El Dorado HS) led a Cerritos-laden field with a first place toss that traveled 12.21 meters. Sophomore Larrisha Fields (Lakewood HS) posted a throw of 42.36 meters in the discus to win the event, with sophomore Tuki Sauvao (Artesia HS) won the javelin with a throw of 38.35 meters.

Also competing in the shot put were Fields (11.04 meters; 4th place) and Sauvao (10.71 meters; 5th place), while Aisha Diakite (El Rancho HS) and Dalton finished sixth and seventh, respectively. Sauvao was a fourth place finisher in the discus with a distance of 36.38 meters, while Gray was fifth at 36.01 meters. Sophomore Angel Sifuentes (Central Union HS) took second in the javelin with a throw of 34.62 meters with Gray in third place at 30.85 meters. 

In the hammer, sophomore Carissa English (Marina HS) finished a close second place behind Katherine Harmon of Bowdoin College with a distance of 44.19 meters, while freshman Dorienne Ordaz (Bravo HS) came in third place at 43.94 meters. In their only running event, the quartet of Dalton, Sifuentes, Sauvao and sophomore Alexandria Armstrong (Long Beach Millikan HS/ECC Compton Center) posted a time of 4:31.38 to come in third place in the 1600-meter relay.
