The Cerritos College baseball team broke a 1-1 tie with a pair of runs in the seventh inning, as they defeated host Mt. San Antonio College, 4-1 in a South Coast Conference baseball game on Saturday. The win improved the Falcons record to 11-7 overall and 5-1 in conference play. They will now start a three-game series against Long Beach City College (9-8, 5-1), who is in a three-way tie for first place. The first game is slated for 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Kincaid Field.

In the top of the seventh inning against the Mounties (10-8, 3-3), freshman shortstop Benny Arce (Santa Monica HS) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Sophomore Kyle Carpenter (Mayfair HS), who pitched the first six innings of the game, doubled in Arce off starting pitcher Erik Potts. With two outs and Carpenter on third base, sophomore outfielder Shane Preston (Deer Creek, OK HS) singled home the second run of the inning for a 3-1 lead.

Cerritos added an insurance run in the eighth inning when freshman outfielder Mark Pena (Bell Gardens HS) singled home freshman outfielder Jesse Perdomo (California HS), who led off with a single and was sacrificed to second base by sophomore second baseman Justin Walsh (Katella HS).

Carpenter tossed the first six innings and allowed one run (unearned) on four hits and struck out six batters. Freshman Travis Bonner (Cabrillo HS) came on in relief and pitched the seventh inning to earn the win, with freshman Jerald Johnston (California HS) picking up his third save with two innings of hitless relief.
