With their sweep of East Los Angeles College, the Cerritos College baseball team has kept themselves in the hunt for the South Coast Conference title. Winners of their last five games, the Falcons (18-12, 10-5) opened the day two games out of first place and now have six more games left on their regular season schedule. They finished off their sweep of the Huskies on Saturday at Kincaid Field with a 9-1 win. The team still has a three-game series with both El Camino College and Los Angeles Harbor College, while they on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. they will host the Warriors.

Down 1-0 heading into the second inning, sophomore designated hitter Kyle Carpenter (Mayfair HS) led off with a double that hit the third base bag. After a sacrifice bunt by freshman outfielder Jesse Perdomo (California HS) moved him over, Carpenter scored on a base hit up the middle by freshman shortstop Benny Arce (Santa Monica HS).

The Falcons added a pair of runs in the third inning on an RBI double from sophomore third baseman Victor Guadalupe (La Quinta HS) followed by a sacrifice fly by freshman catcher Gary James (Sunny Hills HS). Freshman second baseman Andrew Natividad (Valencia HS) contributed an RBI single in the fourth inning that plated Perdomo, while sophomore first baseman Brett Thompson (Corona del Mar HS/Saddleback HS) gave the team a 7-1 lead with a two-run double in the fifth inning.

Freshman starting pitcher Valentin Flores-Gomez (Gahr HS) earned the win with 5 1/3 innings of work, as he scattered one run on five hits to improve to 4-3. Sophomore relief pitcher George Mendoza (Bell Gardens HS) retired the first 10 batters he faced and earned a 3 2/3 innings quality save.

Freshman outfielder Mark Pena (Bell Gardens HS) hit the ball the hardest on the day, but had very little to show for hit. He led off the first inning with what looked like a home run, only to have ELAC's Chris Flores pull it back in the park for an out. Flores stole an extra base hit away from Pena in the fourth inning, with Pena finishing his day with a two-run single in the seventh inning.
