After suffering a lopsided loss on Tuesday afternoon, the Cerritos College baseball team responded with an 11-6 South Coast Conference win at Mt. San Antonio on Thursday. The Falcons (10-7, 3-2) will close out their three-game series with the Mounties (7-11, 2-3) with a noon game at Kincaid Field on Saturday.

From the outset of the game, Cerritos took an early lead and were up at one point by as much as 7-2. They broke a 1-1 tie with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning which started when freshman second baseman Derrick Edwards (Mary Star of the Sea HS) led off with a base hit. After freshman designated hitter Emiliano Estrada (Long Beach Poly HS) reached base on an error, freshman third baseman Jonathan Avila (Carson HS) drew a walk to load the bases.

Sophomore shortstop Daniel Lopez (Montebello HS), who was inserted into the leadoff spot in the batting order, singled home a run, with sophomore first baseman Mike Heenan (JSerra HS) driving in the second run on a fielder's choice.

The Falcons would not relinquish the lead the remainder of the game. Freshman Sean Kinnicutt (Warren HS) started his first game of the season and lasted 2 1/3 innings. He was relieved by sophomore Travis Bonner (Cabrillo HS), who also tossed 2 1/3 innings. Jonathan Marriott (La Quinta HS) came in for the next 3 1/3 innings, with sophomore Jerald Johnston (California HS) striking out a pair in his lone inning of work.

Three-run fourth and seventh innings opened up a big lead for Cerritos, with a two-run single by sophomore outfielder Fermin Beza (California HS/William Jessup University) being the big hit in the fourth inning. In the seventh inning, Estrada doubled to lead off the stanza and advanced on ground out, but was thrown out at home when he tried to score on the play. Lopez doubled home Avila, who previously walked, and then scored on a base hit by Heenan.

Sophomore outfielder Mark Pena (Bell Gardens HS), who drove in a run in the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly, extended his school-record hitting streak to 29 games with a single in the sixth inning.
