Heading into Sunday's action, the Cerritos College baseball team was one win away from advancing to the second round of the Southern California Regional Playoffs. However, consecutive losses to #5-seeded Grossmont College (29-10) put an end to the season for the #12-seeded Falcons (24-15). They posted a 5-3 win on Saturday to open their best-of-three series, but were defeated, 3-2 and 6-2 to end their year.

Game 2 - It was a slow start for the Falcons and sophomore starting pitcher Jonathan Marriott (La Quinta HS), as Grossmont scored single runs in the first and second innings. It could have been worse, as Marriott (5-4) allowed three hits in the first inning, along with two more hits and a hit batter in the second inning, with the bases remaining loaded.

The Falcons chipped away with a solo run in the third inning, as consecutive singles by freshman designated hitter Eric Hefner (El Dorado HS) and sophomore shortstop Daniel Lopez (Montebello HS) was followed by an RBI single from sophomore first baseman Mike Heenan (JSerra HS).

The Griffins added what would turn out to be the game-winning run in the fourth inning, while Cerritos received a two-out, solo home run from Lopez in the seventh inning. It turned out to be the final hit of the game for the Falcons, who were forced into a winner-take-all game.

Game 3 - In the final game, the Falcons took a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but saw Grossmont score the next five runs before making a response. Lopez led off the game with a base hit, moved to second base on a ground out and advanced to third on a wild pitch. He then came home on an error.

In the bottom of the second inning, Andres Rios led off with a home run off losing pitcher Sean Kinnicutt (Warren HS) to tie the game. Two errors, a single and a bases loaded walk accounted for the next two runs in the stanza, with another error playing a role in one of the two Grossmont runs in the third inning.

A run-scoring double by sophomore catcher Gary James (Sunny Hills HS) got the team to within 5-2, but the Falcons would only be able to generate three walks and a James single in the eighth inning the remainder of the game.

On the mound, Kinnicutt (4-2) lasted 3 1/3 innings, with freshman Alexander Noriega (Carson HS) tossing 3 2/3 and allowed one run on four hits while striking out three batters.
