After spotting East Los Angeles College to a 2-0 lead after the first inning, the Cerritos College baseball team scored three unanswered runs for a 3-2 South Coast Conference win Tuesday night. The victory keeps the Falcons (13-9, 5-2) in a tie for second place in the conference standings. The team will host the Huskies (8-14, 3-4) in the second game of their series at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday at Kincaid Field.

Freshman starting pitcher Sean Kinnicutt (Warren HS) withstood three hits and an error in the first inning, followed by a pair of singles and a walk in the second inning before settling down. He scattered three singles and a walk over the next four innings to earn the win for the Falcons. Sophomore relief pitcher Travis Bonner (Cabrillo HS) struck out a pair of batters in the seventh inning, with sophomore closer Jerald Johnston (California HS) coming on for a two-inning save.

Cerritos started their comeback in the top of the second inning when sophomore catcher Gary James (Sunny Hills HS) led off with a walk and scored on a one-out double by freshman second baseman Derrick Edwards (Mary Star of the Sea HS). They tied the game in the top of the sixth inning when sophomore outfielder Mark Pena (Bell Gardens HS) singled with one out and James drew another walk. Sophomore outfielder Fermin Beza (California HS/William Jessup University) doubled in Pena, with James stranded at third base.

The eventual game-winning run came in the seventh inning, courtesy of an East LA error. Sophomore shortstop Daniel Lopez (Montebello HS) singled with two outs and moved to second base on a wild pitch. That set the table for sophomore first baseman Mike Heenan (JSerra HS), whose ground ball was booted by Huskies shortstop Seve Romo, which allowed Lopez to score.
