Baseball: Five players earn all-conference recognition

The Cerritos College baseball team finished second in the South Coast Conference and had five of their players earn all-conference recognition. The Falcons, who were seeded #12 for the Southern California Regional Playoffs, had three of their players receive 1st Team recognition, with two of them named to the 2nd Team.

Outfielder Mark Pena (Bell Gardens HS) was named to the 1st Team for the second year in a row, while both shortstop Daniel Lopez (Montebello HS) and relief pitcher Jerald Johnston (California HS) also were named 1st Team after receiving Honorable Mention accolades as a freshman. Named to the 2nd Team were freshman second baseman Derrick Edwards (Mary Star of the Sea HS) and sophomore outfielder Fermin Beza (California HS/William Jessup University).

Pena batted .372 in conference play and was second on the team with 20 RBI, while he led the team with 10 stolen bases. As for Lopez, he hit at a .366 clip and led the conference with 26 runs scored. He also clubbed 10 doubles and two home runs, while driving in 18 runs. Johnston, the team's closer, went 3-1 with three saves and a 2.18 ERA in 20 2/3 innings of work.

Edwards led the conference with 24 RBI while hitting .341 in conference play with 11 doubles and two home runs. In his one season with the Falcons, Beza batted led the team with a .378 average in conference play to go along with three triples, one home run and 17 RBI.
