Going deep three more times this season, the Cerritos College baseball team was still unable to hold back Long Beach City College, who recorded a 13-9 South Coast Conference decision on Tuesday. The Falcons (6-22, 5-13), trailed, 8-0 at one point and were able to tie the score late in the game only to see the Vikings (20-12, 13-4) put four runs on the board in the eighth inning to post the win. The two teams will meet up on Thursday at Kincaid Field in their second of three meetings in a row.
Highlighting a six-run sixth inning were home runs from freshmen Matt Den Hartog (Los Alamitos HS) and Wyatt Hall (Long Beach Millikan HS). Trailing 6-1, Den Hartog hit his first of two on the day, this one a two-run blast. Keeping the inning alive was a double from sophomore Trevor McInerney (Cerritos HS/El Camino College) and a walk to Nicholas Martinez (La Serna HS). Up stepped Hall, who hit a three-run bomb, his second home run of the season. Den Hartog added a solo blast in the ninth inning to account for the final run of the game.
On the day, McInerney became the first Falcon since Bryan Baker in 2001 to hit three doubles in a game, while Den Hartog's two home runs were just the 33rd time that's happened in school history. Additionally, the 27 home runs hit by the Falcons this season are the most in a year since the 1999 team hit 38 on the year. The school record for most home runs hit in a season came in 1989 when the state champion Falcons hit 57 home runs.
McInerney ended the day 4-for-5, while sophomore first baseman Michael Gonzalez (St. Bernard HS) finished with three hits. The duo of Den Hartog and freshman outfielder Shea Estrin (West Torrance HS) each added a pair of hits, while Martinez started the day on the mound and went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks and two RBI.
