After playing their sophomore seasons for the Cerritos College baseball team, five of the players have made their plans known for next season. First baseman/outfielder Michael Gonzalez leads the way, as he signed with Colorado State University - Pueblo, while two-year starting catcher Andre Alvarez has signed with Simpson (CA) University. Roberto Salazar, who saw time at multiple positions during his two seasons, will put away his glove and continue his education at Cal State Bakersfield. A pair of transfer, who played just one season at Cerritos have also signed and include outfielder Cody Ahrens with Cal State Los Angeles and middle infielder Trevor McInerney with Cal State Stanislaus.
Michael Gonzalez - A 2nd Team All-South Coast Conference South Division selection after batting .309 and driving in 23 runs, Gonzalez followed up his sophomore campaign by hitting .321 and drove in 10 runs. Although his power numbers were down his sophomore season, Gonzalez improved his on-base percentage (.401). Playing first base as a freshman for the first time in his career, he recorded a stellar .996 fielding percentage with just two errors. He ended his Falcon career on a seven-game hitting streak and had hits in 14 of his final 15 games. He will be joining an NCAA Division II Thunderwolves team that went 26-25 last season and need to replace their graduating first baseman and three outfielders.
Andre Alvarez - A workhorse behind the plate, Alvarez started 43 games as a freshman and was limited to 32 games his sophomore season due to a pair of injuries. Hit at a .254 clip with two home runs and 27 RBI his sophomore year after batting .312 with two home runs, 11 doubles and 29 RBI as a freshman. Solid defensively, Alvarez committed just four errors out of 600 total chances. At the plate his sophomore year, Alvarez collected a trio of three-hit games, while he drove in a season-high five runs against Mt. San Antonio College. With the RedHawks, Alvarez will have a chance to earn a key role on the team after they concluded the season with a 19-24-1 record.
Roberto Salazar, Jr. - A role player his freshman season, Salazar came on strong as a sophomore, but was limited due to injuries. In 22 games, he batted .329 with five home runs and 13 RBI in just 79 at-bats. Salazar missed the last 13 games, but had a 12-game hitting streak in the middle of the season, with three of his home runs coming during that span. In one of his final games of the season, Salazar clubbed a pair of doubles and drove in a career-high three runs.
Cody Ahrens - Playing his freshman season at Home International University, Ahrens came on the scene and batted .308 with five home runs and a team-leading 28 RBI. For his efforts, Ahrens was named 1st Team All-South Coast Conference South Division as an outfielder. He recorded a pair of four-hit games on the season and in a two-game series with East Los Angeles College went 4-for-8 with two home runs and five RBI. Ahrens also drove in a career-high five runs against Los Angeles Harbor College. He will be joining a Golden Eagles team that finished 19-26 on the year and are looking to replace three graduating outfielders. He will also get a chance to play with former Falcons Micah Hee, Jesus Mercado and Nick Penzetta, who played for Cerritos in 2017-18.
Trevor McInerney - A transfer from El Camino College, McInerney led the team with eight home runs and nine doubles on the year in his only season with the Falcons and was a 1st Team all-conference selection. He capped off his Cerritos career with a two-home run effort against Ventura College and also had a pair of four-hit games during the year. He drove in a career-high three runs against Mt. San Jacinto College and Santa Ana College, while he had multiple RBI games three other times. The Warriors went 30-23 on the year and ended their season with a pair of losses in the CCAA Conference Tournament. As someone who played second base, shortstop and third base for Cerritos, McInerney will look to fill one of the vacated positions next season.
