Freshman outfielder Wyatt Hall (Long Beach Millikan HS) drove in sophomore shortstop Trevor McInerney (Cerritos HS/El Camino College) with the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning, as the Cerritos College baseball team defeated Fresno City College, 6-5 Friday night. The Falcons (7-25), who held a 5-1 lead at one point, posted the win over the state's #9-ranked Rams (27-9) under the lights at Elks Field in Santa Maria Wednesday night. The team will travel to San Luis Obispo on Thursday to take on Cuesta College (21-12) at 2:00 p.m., who are ranked #20 in the state.

McInerney led off the ninth inning by getting hit by a pitch and moved to second base on a single by freshman pitcher Anthony Gonzalez, Jr. (Norwalk HS). Up stepped Hall, who laced a single that plated McInerney.

Cerritos held off a late charge by Fresno City College after scoring five runs in the bottom of the second inning. Freshman pitcher Nicholas Martinez (La Serna HS) tossed the first seven innings and allowed three runs (two earned) while striking out seven. He allowed a run in the top of the first inning, as well as an unearned run in the top of the third inning. After retiring the next six batters, Martinez surrendered a solo home run to Chet Allison in the fifth inning and then shut down the Rams through the seventh inning.

The Falcons took their lead in the second inning with Martinez getting things started with a leadoff single and advanced to second base when Hall reached on an error. A second error in the inning loaded the bases with one out for freshman outfielder Shea Estrin (West Torrance HS), who singled home the first two runs of the inning. After a base hit from sophomore first baseman Michael Gonzalez (St. Bernard HS) kept the inning alive, sophomore outfielder Cody Ahrens (Mayfair HS/Hope International University) doubled in a pair, with freshman third baseman Matt Den Hartog (Los Alamitos HS) bringing home the fifth run on a ground out.

After Fresno City scored twice in the top of the eighth inning off freshman Mark Gil (Norwalk HS), sophomore Joshua Jorgensen (Lakewood HS/East Los Angeles College) came on in relief and struck out the two batters he faced to end the inning. Anthony Gonzalez, Jr. came in to pitch the ninth inning and struck out two of the three batters he faced to earn the win.
