The Cerritos College men's tennis team recorded their 10th straight win, as they defeated host San Diego Mesa, 5-4 on Friday. The Falcons (11-2) will now resume South Coast Conference play on Tuesday, as they travel to El Camino College for a 2:00 p.m. match.
Hobbled by several nagging injuries, Cerritos split with the Olympians (7-3) in singles play. But, true to form, the top two singles players easily won in straight sets, as sophomore Nathan Eshmade (Kings Baptist, Australia HS) and freshman Amadi Kagoma (Malezi School, Kenya HS) both remained undefeated on the season. Eshmade posted a 6-4, 6-1 win over James Tenbroeck, while Kagoma handed Jesse Donahue a 6-1, 6-1 setback.
Freshman Sheldon Hseih (Long Beach Poly HS) was dropped down to the #6 position, and it paid off with a 6-3, 6-3 win. The Falcons were in position to take a fourth singles match, but freshman Nicholas Simonelli (Long Beach Wilson HS) saw Christopher Bastardi come back after losing the first set, 6-3, but went on to post a 7-5 win in the second set and then take the tiebreaker, 12-10.
The team clinched the match at #2 doubles with Simonelli and Hseih. Leading 4-1 in the second set after winning the first, 6-3, the duo dropped the next two games and were on the verge of losing momentum. But the tandem won eight of the final nine points and secured a 6-3 victory.
