M. Tennis: Falcons win five of their six matches on first day

On the first day of the CCCAA State Championships, the Cerritos College men's tennis team saw all three of their doubles teams and two of three singles players post victories. The state championships, which are being held in Ojai, continue all the way through Sunday.

In singles play, sophomore Nathan Eshmade (Kings Baptist, Australia HS), the top-seeded player from Southern California, had no trouble dispatching Eric Nishimatsu of Foothill College in their Round of 64 match. Eshmade posted a 6-1, 6-1 win and will now take on Rick Peloso of Modesto College, the #16-seeded player from Northern California at 8:00 a.m. on Friday at the Oxnard Tennis Club.

The team's other ranked singles player, freshman Amadi Kagoma (Malezi School, Kenya HS), recorded a 6-4, 6-2 straight set win over Wyatt Kershaw of Fresno City College. The #9-ranked Kagoma will now take in James Lafond of Irvine Valley College at 8:00 a.m. at Pacifica High School. Freshman Sheldon Hseih (Long Beach Poly HS) suffered the only loss on the day, as he was defeated, 6-1, 6-1 by Irvine Valley's Jack Divorty in their Round of 128 match.

Eshmade and Kagoma are seeded #1 from Southern California in doubles and they opened with a 6-0, 6-0 win against Nathan Cao and Juan Ortiz of Sacramento City College. Their next match is slated for 12:00 p.m. at the Oxnard Tennis Center against Ryu Miyake and Tokunosuke Takahshishi of Orange Coast College. Hseih teamed with freshman Nicholas Simonelli (Long Beach Wilson HS) to defeated the #11-seeded team from Northern California, James Han and Alvaro Varon of Foothill College, 6-1, 7-5. They will now take on #6-seeded team from the South, Victor Dos Santos and Vitor Mendes of Ventura College.

In another upset win for Cerritos in doubles, the pairing of sophomore Mark Herrera (Bosco Tech HS) and freshman Milos Zoric (Gimnazjia Indijija, Serbia HS) posted a 6-0, 6-2 win against #13-seeded Brandon Lew and Geeno Villamor of Chabot College. On Friday at 12:00 p.m. at the Marriott Residence Inn, they will take on #4-seeded Gustavo castro and Alan Lamas of Grossmont College.
