M. Tennis: Falcons split four matches at NorCal Tournament

The Cerritos College men's tennis team got a chance to face four teams from Northern California over the weekend at the Fresno City Tournament. The Falcons (16-5) defeated both Modesto Junior College (6-3) and Foothill College (6-3), but suffered losses to both American River College (6-3) and Fresno City College (5-0). The team finishes up their regular season on Friday at 2:00 p.m. when they host Ventura College.

Cerritos vs. Modesto: The Falcons took early control of the match with a pair of wins in doubles play and then finish off the Pirates (11-4). Sophomore Nathan Eshmade (Kings Baptist, Australia HS) and freshman Amadi Kagoma (Malezi School, Kenya HS) recorded a convincing 8-2 win in doubles play, while the two each added dominant wins in singles. Freshmen Sheldon Hseih (Long Beach Poly HS) and Nicholas Simonelli (Long Beach Wilson HS) were double-winners, as they recorded an 8-7 victory in their doubles match, while Hseih posted a 6-3, 6-3 singles win. Simonelli was tested in singles, but came away with a 7-5, 3-6, 10-8 win in the #4 position.

Cerritos vs. American River: Eshmade and Kagoma, the Falcons top singles players, remainded undefeated on the year with their straight set wins. However, the duo suffered their first doubles loss of the season, as Lovedeep Singh and Adam Duong handed them a 9-8(4) setback. Cerritos was swept in doubles play, with Hseih the third singles player to pick a victory, as he recorded a 6-2, 2-6, 10-4 victory. Eshmade's 6-3, 6-4 win over Lovedeep was impressive, considering his opponent is a ranked in the top 45 in the nation among junior players.

Cerritos vs. Fresno City: Eshmade was on his way to his second big win of the weekend, as he was leading Matt Alves, 6-2, 3-0 before the match was called after the Rams (14-0) earned their fifth team point. Alves, a bounceback from UC Santa Barbara, came in ranked #19 in the country among junior players. The Falcons top doubles team took their second loss in a row, as Eshmade and Kagoma were defeated, 9-7. After getting swept in doubles play by Fresno, the match was stopped after they won their fifth team point.

Cerritos vs. Foothill: The Falcons posted a couple of close wins in doubles play to take a 2-1 advantage over the Owls (12-2). Eshmade and Kagoma recorded an 8-5 win, while freshmen Edgar Munoz (Paramount HS) and Milos Zoric (Gimnazjia Indijija, Serbia HS) escaped with an 8-6 win. That momentum carried into singles play, with Eshmade and Kagoma posting straight set wins to each remain undefeated on the year. Simonelli played a solid match in his 6-2, 6-3 win, while Munoz finished off the day with a 6-4, 7-5 victory.
