With only one returner with much playing experience, the Cerritos College women's tennis team opened their season with a 7-2 non-conference loss to visiting Glendale College on Tuesday. The Falcons (0-1) will be back on their home courts on Thursday with a 2:00 p.m. non-conference match against Irvine Valley College.
The team's most experienced sophomore, Stef Flores (Golden Valley Charter HS), opened with a close match in doubles play, but dropped an 8-4 decision with freshman Anastasia Khomyachenko (Sochi, Russia). Flores dropped her #2 singles match, 6-0, 6-2, but Khomyachenko recorded her first collegiate win with a hard fought 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 win in the #3 spot on the ladder.
Also recording a win in singles play was freshman Taylor Heath (Cerritos HS) at the top of the ladder, as she came away with a 6-4, 7-6(5) decision. Sophomore Merli Alcasid (Gahr HS) and freshman Katia Brambila (Bell HS) played a close match in the #3 doubles match, but came up short in an 8-6 decision. The two did not fare well in their singles matches.
