W. Tennis: Falcons post 8-1 win over Cypress

The Cerritos College women's tennis team won a couple of close matches on their way to an 8-1 non-conference win over Cypress College on Tuesday. The Falcons (4-2) will resume South Coast Conference play on Thursday when they travel to Long Beach City College for a 2:00 p.m. match.

With the top two doubles teams each winning quick decisions, the pairing of freshman Katia Brambila (Bell HS) and sophomore Merli Alcasid (Gahr HS) were locked in a tight match in the #3 doubles position. The duo eventually pulled out an 8-6 decision, which gave the Falcons a 3-0 lead heading into singles action.

At the top of the ladder, freshman Taylor Heath (Cerritos HS) rebounded after dropping the second set to Jessica Cornea in the #1 position and won the tie-breaker, 10-3. Cerritos posted straight set wins in four of the other five matches, while their only loss was a tie-breaker in the #5 position, with Brambila losing, 4-6, 6-1, 8-10.

Freshman Anastasia Khomyachenko (Sochi, Russia) posted a convincing 6-3, 6-2 win in the #2 position, with sophomore Stef Flores (Golden Valley Charter HS) handing Shamine Singh a 6-0, 6-1 defeat. Freshman Mariia Yatsenko (School 328, Ukraine) won her third match of the season in the #4 position with a 6-1, 6-0 decision, while Alcasid posted a 6-4, 6-2 victory.
