W. Tennis: Cerritos has two singles and two doubles remaining

The Cerritos College women's tennis team has a pair of singles players and doubles teams remaining after the first day of the CCCAA State Championships in Ojai. The Falcons saw two of their singles players get eliminated, while the rest will get underway Friday morning.

In singles action, #14-seeded Taylor Heath (Cerritos HS) earned a bye in the first round and then recorded a 6-3, 6-0 win over Stephanie Schenk of Diablo Valley College in her lone match of the day. The freshman is now scheduled to take on #3-seeded Vanessa Taves of Modesto College in a Round of 32 match. Also winning her lone match of the day was freshman Anastasia Khomyachenko (Sochi, Russia), as the #13-seeded posted a 6-1, 6-1 victory against Deanne Dinio of Diable Valley College. In her morning match on Friday, Khomyachenko will take on #4-seeded Marifer Ochoa of Fresno Cuty College.

Sophomore Stef Flores (Golden Valley Charter HS) posted a first round win over Tiana Cung of Irvine Valley College, 6-2, 6-1, but was then eliminated with an 0-6, 0-6 loss to top-seeded Chieko Yamada of Shasta College. Freshman Mariia Yatsenko (School 328, Ukraine) recorded a 6-1, 6-2 win in her first round match against Yannick Garcia of Ventura College. She was eliminated after a 2-6, 0-6 loss to #6-seeded Paula Cenusa of Cabrillo College.

Heath and Yatsenko, who are seeded #2 in doubles play, defeated Shamine Singh and Jasmine Singh of Cypress College (6-2, 6-1) and will take on Maria Kossenko and Jenna McGurik of Foothill College on Friday afternoon. The duo of Khomyachenko and Flores are seeded #13 and opened with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Emily Rosa and Dalila Vasquez of College of the Sequoias. In their Round of 32 match on Friday afternoon, they will face Hali Dickson and Emily Nickels, who upset the #6-seeded team in straight sets.
