Still looking for the right combinations in the early stages of the season, the Cerritos College women's tennis team came up on the short end of a 6-3 decision in their non-conference match against Riverside City College on Tuesday. The Falcons (2-2) will come right back on Friday when they host Victor Valley College at 2:00 p.m. on Friday in their South Coast Conference opener.

A pair of three-set losses at the top of the singles ladder, along with a loss in the #6 position and a close decision in the #1 doubles match, turned out to be the difference on the day. Taking over the top spot in the doubles ladder, freshmen Taylor Heath (Cerritos HS) and Mariia Yatsenko (School 328, Ukraine) are still learning each other's style, as they dropped a close 8-6 decision. The #2 team of sophomore Stef Flores (Golden Valley Charter HS) and freshman Anastasia Khomyachenko (Sochi, Russia) also played to an 8-6 score, but were victorious.

A couple a close matches in the first two positions in singles turned out to be the decider in the match. At the top, Heath fell, 6-7, 6-4, 4-6 to Acacia Dettman, while Khomachenko fell, 6-2, 1-6, 4-6 to Sheila James.

The team was still in the match after wins by both Yatsenko (6-2, 6-2) and freshman Katia Brambila (Bell HS), who posted a 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 win in the #5 singles match. Also falling in three sets was #6 singles player, sophomore Merli Alcasid (Gahr HS), who was defeated, 6-7, 6-3, 3-6.
