W. Tennis: Cerritos holds onto second place with win

With their 6-3 win over visiting El Camino College on Thursday, the Cerritos College women's tennis team has taken over sole possession of second place in the South Coast Conference. The Falcons (7-3, 3-1) handed the Warriors (6-2-1, 2-1-1) their first conference loss. On Friday, the team will host San Diego Mesa College in a 2:00 p.m. non-conference match.

The teams were tied 3-3 at the conclusion of singles play, but Cerritos earned wins in all three doubles matches to pull out the team victory. Two of the three doubles matches were solid wins for the Falcons, as freshmen Taylor Heath (Cerritos HS) and Mariia Yatsenko (School 328, Ukraine) recorded an 8-3 win in the #1 position. Sophomore Stef Flores (Golden Valley Charter HS) and freshman Anastasia Khomyachenko (Sochi, Russia) posted an 8-2 decision in the #2 doubles match.

In singles play, Khomyachenko (6-2, 6-2), Yatsenko (6-2, 4-6, 6-2) and Flores (6-2, 6-2) all earned wins, which gave Cerritos the team victory.
