W. Tennis: Top doubles team seeded #2 for state championships

The Cerritos College women's tennis team will be sending four singles players and two doubles teams to the CCCAA State Championships this week in Ojai. The four-day event will get underway Thursday morning with two of the singles players competing, while the other two were ranked in the top 16 and have received a bye, as have both doubles teams.

The pair of freshmen Taylor Heath (Cerritos HS) and Mariia Yatsenko (School 324, Ukraine), who reached the championship match of the South Coast Conference Tournament, were seeded #2 for the tournament and have received a first round bye. The other team of sophomore Stef Flores (Golden Valley Charter HS) and freshman Anastasia Khomyachenko (Sochi, Russia) were seeded #13 and won't play until Thursday afternoon. Heath and Yatsenko will take on the winner of the Yesenia Carillo/Amy Diaz (Imperial Valley) vs. Shamine Singh/Jasmine Singh (Cypress) match and play at Camino Real Park. Flores and Khomyachenko will take on Emily Rosa and Dalila Vasquez of College of the Sequoias, who also received a bye, at Buena High School.

In singles play, Khomyachenko was seeded #13 and will take on Deanne Dinio of Diablo Valley College at 11:00 a.m. at Ventura High School, while Heath was seeded #14. She will square off against Stephanie Schenk, also of Diablo Valley, at 8:30 a.m. at Ventura High School.

Competing in first round matches are both Flores and Yatsenko, with Flores taking on Tiana Cung of Irvine Valley College at Buena High School. The winner must then face #1-seeded Cheiko Yamada of Shasta College. As for Yatsenko, she will take on Yannick Garcia of Ventura College on the Pirates home courts, with the winner playing #6-seeded Paula Cenusa of Cabrillo College.
