The Cerritos women's tennis team handed Palomar an 8-1 decision

Playing against a short-handed Palomar College, the Cerritos College women's tennis team was able to easily post an 8-1 win on Friday. The victory improved the Falcons record to 2-1 on the year, and they will now host Riverside City College at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

With the Comets playing with only four athletes, Cerritos received two forfeit wins in singles play and another in doubles. Of the matches that were held, the Falcons picked up straight set wins in three singles and all three doubles matches. Freshman Anastasia Khomyachenko (Sochi, Russia) fought through a tough first set in the #2 singles match to win, 7-5 and then rode that momentum to a 6-0 win in the second set.

Freshman Katia Brambila (Bell HS) registered a 6-1, 6-4 win in the #3 position, while sophomore Merli Alcasid (Gahr HS) recorded her first win of the year with a 6-0, 6-3 victory.

Freshman Mariia Yatsenko (School 328, Ukraine) dropped a three-set match in the #1 singles position, 2-6, 6-4, 1-6, but came back to team with freshman Taylor Heath (Cerritos HS) for an 8-4 win in doubles play. Khomyachenko and her doubles partner, sophomore Stef Flores (Golden Valley Charter HS), continued to play well and won, 8-0.
