W. Tennis: Win over Ventura is fifth in a row for Cerritos

The Cerritos College women's tennis team won their fifth match in a row, as they defeated host Ventura College, 7-2 on Friday. The Falcons (11-3) will now travel to Victor Valley College on Thursday for a South Coast Conference match and then drive north for the North/South Tournament in Fresno on Friday.

In the win over the Pirates, Cerritos opened by winning the three doubles matches and rode that momentum into singles play, where all four of their wins were by straight sets. The closest doubles match came in the #1 position, with freshmen Taylor Heath (Cerritos HS) and Mariia Yatsenko (School 328, Ukraine) coming away with a 9-8 win.

The top half of the singles ladder proved to be the strongest for Cerritos, with Yatsenko earning a 6-2, 6-0 victory in the #3 position to lead the way. Heath won, 6-2, 6-4 in the #1 position, while freshman Anastasia Khomyachenko (Sochi, Russia) posted a 6-4, 6-0 victory in the #2 spot. Freshman Katia Brambila (Bell HS) finished the day off with a 6-2 , 6-2 win at #5.

Other doubles wins came from Khomyachenko and sophomore Stef Flores (Golden Valley Charter HS) with an 8-1 score, while Brambila teamed with sophomore Merli Alcasid (Gahr HS) for an 8-2 victory.
