W. Tennis: Cerritos hands Rio Hondo 9-0 setback

With three of their top players taking the day off, the Cerritos College women's tennis team still handed visiting Rio Hondo College a 9-0 decision in a South Coast Conference match on Tuesday. The Falcons (17-5, 8-3) sit comfortably in second place in the conference standings with one more match remaining. They will travel to College of the Desert (7-3, 7-3) on Thursday for a 2:00 p.m. match.

With a trio of players sitting out, several players competed for the first time in new positions on the singles ladder. Sophomore Stef Flores (Golden Valley Charter HS) moved to the top spot and recorded a 6-2, 6-0 win, while freshman Katia Brambila (Bell HS) registered a 6-1, 6-1 win in the #2 position for the first time on the season. Playing at #3 for the first time, sophomore Merli Alcasid (Gahr HS) had little trouble in her 6-2, 6-0 victory, with sophomore Amanda Del Cid (Libra Academy HS) stepping into the #4 position and won, 6-1, 6-2.

Freshman Mona Nevalta (Norwalk HS) improved to 4-1 on the year with a 6-0, 6-2 win, while freshman Edith Bermudez (Pioneer HS) remained undefeated (3-0) after a 7-5, 6-0 win.

In doubles action, Flores and Nevalta won for the second time, as they recorded an 8-1 win, with Alcasid and Brambila teaming up for an 8-2 win. Del Cid and Bermudez are now 3-0 as doubles partners after they posted an 8-3 victory.
