In their first tournament of the season, the Cerritos College men's basketball team advanced to the finals. Competing in the Miramar Tournament, the Falcons (2-1) opened with a 63-39 win over Victor Valley College and followed that with a 60-40 victory over the host Jets. In the championship game, the team came up short in a 58-55 decision against MiraCosta College. Cerritos will get a 12-day break before entering the Irvine Valley Tournament, where they will open with a 2:00 p.m. game against Ventura College on November 19.
Cerritos vs. Victor Valley: The Falcons received double-digit scoring from a pair of freshman starters, as Dillon Reise (Mayfair HS) posted 13 points with six rebounds, while Brian Nebo (St. John Bosco HS) added 10 points and four rebounds. Cerritos opened a big 40-19 lead at halftime, which allowed all of the players to receive playing time. Sophomore Jay Merriweather (Temescal Canyon HS) produced 11 points and five rebounds off the bench, while draining a trio of three-pointers. Sophomore Khalid Washington (Los Alamitos HS/Central Wyoming College) accounted for eight points and five rebounds off the bench, with sophomore Jonathan Brown (Fairfax HS) dishing out nine assists to go with his seven points.
Cerritos vs. Miramar: A low-scoring first half (22-17) opened up in the second half, as the Falcons controlled the boards, which ignited their fast break. Cerritos amassed a 45-21 advantage on the boards, with Reise leading the way with nine, along with a 11 points. Nebo also scored 11 points and joined sophomore Jamal Watson (Lakewood HS) and freshman Elvis Okafor (International School of Lagos, Nigeria) with six rebounds apiece. Freshman Luis Medearis (View Park HS) scored nine points off the bench and also pulled down six caroms, while the team received a game-high 12 points and eight assists from Brown.
Cerritos vs. MiraCosta: With time running out, the Falcons had a chance to take a lead, but missed a layup, with the Spartans getting the rebound and converting a pair of free throws to secure the win. Trailing by double-digits for most of the game, Cerritos started their comeback with Reise (14 points) and Medearis (14 points) combining for seven three-pointers. Brown also scored 14 points, with Medearis leading the team with six rebounds and four assists.
