In the first post-season event of the year, Cerritos College freshman Bryce Pearson (Bellflower HS) finished third at the Southern California Decathlon Championships. The two-day, 10-event championships were held at El Camino College, with Pearson amassing 5839 total points. His placing, along with the point total, qualifies Pearson to the CCCAA State Championships, which will take place on May 20-21 at Mt. San Antonio College.

After the first five events, in which Pearson recorded the most points in two of them, he was sitting near the top of the overall standings. His best event was the 400 meters, where his time of 50.33 earned him 799 points, which was the most he earned for any of the events. His long jump of 6.57 meters was the second best and earned him 713 points, while he turned in the best high jump at 1.88 meters, which was good for 696 points.

The second day started well for Pearson, who posted a third place time of 16.57 in the 110-meter high hurdles and added 670 points to his total. The next three events hurt his chance to come in first place overall, as he collected just 278 points for his discus of 20.33 meters and would only receive 352 points for his eighth place finish in the javelin at 33.74 meters. He did tie for third place in the pole vault at 3.23 meters, which was good for 413 points. Pearson ended strong with a second place time of 4:34.73 in the 1500 meters, which collected him 714 points. He was able to stay close to Bakersfield College's Tucker Monaco, who was looking to overtake him for the third place overall finish. Although Monaco won the 1500 meters, Pearson was less than two seconds behind and held him off by 25 total points.
