When the seeding was announced for the upcoming Southern California Regional Playoffs, Cerritos College was left out of the 18 teams to be selected. But the Falcons (16-11), who came in second place in the South Coast Conference South Division, and fourth overall, discovered that the power numbers originally applied were incorrect, thus forcing a re-calculation by the seeding committee. This resulted in Cerritos being added to the postseason field.

In a statement by the California Community College Athletic Association Commissioner Carlyle Carter, "The SCC (South Coast Conference) decided to employ "Divisions" for the 2013-14 basketball season. With 10 teams, they were eligible to do so. For scheduling purposes, they played a double-round robin within each division and a single-round against the other division for a total of 13 contests for all teams in each division. The WSC (Western State Conference), which is the only other conference in the South in divisions, plays only double-round robin within their own division and any games against the other division are counted as non-conference. As a rule, the CCCAA does not have any control over regular-season conference scheduling, nor does the Association determine how conference champions are determined."

Carter continues, "It is the responsibility of each conference to make those determinations and provide the seeding committee with the champions and also order of finish. It is apparent that because the SCC counted the crossover contests as "conference contests", questions were raised in the minds of those present. Essentially, a value judgment was being placed on the decision of the SCC to count the crossover contests as conference games. That was not in the purview of the seeding committee just as is the case for the Association. Rather than be consistent and apply the same methodology as applied to the divisions of the WSC, the seeding committee decided to treat the individual divisional members of the SCC as one conference and apply the "multiplier" accordingly. I asked that a re-run of the numbers take place by using the same methodology and the result is below. The situation is such that by not addressing the "error" a team is left out when they should be in and by doing so a team is removed after believing that they had made the field of 18. In my opinion, the decision must be to insert the team that was in by the proper application of the methodology and replace Palomar with Cerritos."

The addition of the Falcons to the Southern California Regional Playoffs gives the team a chance to take on the Dons (14-14), who finished in fifth place in the Orange Empire Conference. This will mark the first meeting of the season between the two teams, with the winner advancing to the second round, where they will travel to #1-seeded Ventura College (27-3) on Saturday.
