W. Basketball: Strong second half leads Falcons in win

Heading into the second half, the Cerritos College women's basketball team trailed host Riverside City College, 32-29. But after making good on 16 of their 29 shots in the final 20 minutes, the Falcons (5-6) were able to pull away for a 75-58 non-conference win on Friday. The team will get a week off before entering the Fullerton Tournament next weekend.

Hot shooting from three-point range highlighted the second half, as the team converted ix of eight to outscore the Tigers (5-7), 46-26 in the final 20 minutes. Freshman Cassidy Carrillo (St. Paul HS) scored 11 of her game-high 20 points in the second half, as she made good on all three of her treys in the second half and netted five on the night. It was a 13-3 run that put Cerritos on top, 43-39 with 14:54 remaining, as freshman center Selena Romero (Lakewood HS) hit a three-pointer to give the Falcons a 38-36 lead they would not relinquish.

In a span of 6:01, Carrillo scored all 11 of her second half points, with sophomore Nia Lateju (Norwalk HS) netting a pair of free throws, as Cerritos saw a 48-41 advantage turn into a 60-45 lead. The biggest lead of the game was 67-50 with 4:43 left.

Carrillo scored her 20 points off the bench in 16 minutes of play, while Romero accounted for 17 points and 12 rebounds, with Lateju finishing with 16 points, nine caroms and two steals. Sophomore Alii Salone (Gahr HS) added eight points and four rebounds, with sophomores Jacalyn Saiza (Santa Fe HS) and Tache' King (Gahr HS) each recording four assists. Three Riverside players scored in double-figures in the loss.
