With the South Coast Conference South Division title on the line, the Cerritos College women's basketball team came within a few minutes of posting their biggest upset of the season. The Falcons (15-11, 8-4) needed a win over Long Beach City College at The Aviary on Friday to earn a share of the divisional title. Leading with a little over five minutes left in the game, Cerritos committed a couple of costly turnovers and dropped a 58-50 decison to the Vikings (23-4, 10-2). The team will conclude their regular season next Friday at 5:00 p.m. at Los Angeles Harbor College and then wait to hear about the playoff seeding.

Freshman Cassidy Carrillo (St. Paul HS) put Cerritos on top, 46-43 with 5:19 left in the second half, but then fell behind by two points after a basket by Symphony Logan with 2:40 left. The biggest blow to the upset bid was when LBCC's Shakeena Benton drained a three-pointer with 1:52 remaining for a 52-57 Viking lead. The basket by Carrillo would turn out to be the last for the Falcons the remainder of the game, as they scored their final four points from the free throw line.

Cerritos had a 10-minute scoring drought in the first half and trailed by seven points (30-23). But they showed a great deal of resilience and clawed their way to a 37-36 lead with 10:39 left after a pair of Nia Lateju (Norwalk HS) free throws. One setback the Falcons could not overcome was the loss of freshman center Selena Romero (Lakewood HS), who was injured with 7:40 remaining and LB City leading, 41-40. Before her injury, Romero had contributed 11 points and eight rebounds.

The Vikings received 22 points from Benton, while Crystal Cockerhan scored 13 points, pulled down six rebounds and blocked six shots. Sophomore guard Priscilla Valdovinos (Fremont HS) led the Falcons with 12 points, while Lateju posted 10 points, but just three rebounds. Sophomore Alii Salone (Gahr HS) finished with nine points and eight rebounds.
