W. Basketball: Team takes third place at tournament

Led by a 16-point, 11-rebound performance from freshman center Selena Romero (Lakewood HS), the Cerritos College women's basketball team won the third place game at the Fullerton Tournament. The Falcons (7-7) defeated the host Hornets (4-11), 51-35 and will now get ready for the start of South Coast Conference play next Wednesday when they travel to Los Angeles Southwest College for a 7:00 p.m. contest.

Leading by a slim 18-14 margin with 5:06 left in the first half, the Falcons went on an 8-0 run to end the half and take a comfortable 12-point lead into intermission. All-Tournament selection Romero, who netted 7-of-14 shots, accounted for six of the final eight points in the half and also opened the second half with a jump shot.

Coming off the bench, freshman Cassidy Carrillo (St. Paul HS) netted a pair of three-pointers and finished the game with nine points, while a trio of Falcons scored six points in the win. Sophomore forwards Nia Lateju (Norwalk HS) and Alii Salone (Gahr HS) joined sophomore guard Dijonnae Murphy (Santa Fe HS) with six points, while Lateju pulled down four rebounds. Sophomore guard Jacalyn Saiza (Santa Fe HS) added five points, six rebounds and four assists, with sophomore guard Priscilla Valdovinos (Fremont HS) handing out five assists.
