W. Soccer: Road wins will go a long way as season progresses
When the Cerritos College women's soccer schedule was released, some had to wonder why head coach Ruben Gonzalez had his team playing their first 10 games on the road. With the playoff seeding based solely on a power ranking, Gonzalez knew that a road win against a good team would mean a lot more than a home win against a team struggling to break the .500 mark. So, for the third game in a row, the Falcons traveled to Northern California and on Friday, recorded a 4-1 win over Cosumnes River College. Cerritos (2-0-1) will take a day off before face Sierra College at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday.

In the win over Cosumnes River, the Falcons took a 1-0 lead the sixth minute when freshman forward Claudia Ibarra (Universidad de Guadalajara HS) sent a corner kick that was poorly cleared and landed in front of sophomore midfielder Chelsea Villegas (Bishop Amat HS), who volleyed the ball into the net. The lead swelled to 4-0 with three second half goals before the Hawks scored to break up the shutout.

It was 2-0 in the 58th minute when freshman forward Jasmine Cornejo (Artesia HS) sent the ball from the right side and across the box to freshman forward Jazmin Aguas (San Pasqual HS), who settled the ball and scored into the top corner. Cornejo had a hand in the third goal when she dribbled toward the goal and found sophomore defender Jennifer Mejicanos (Bellflower HS) behind the Cosumnes River defenders and scored easily against Oliana De La Torre in the 76th minute.

The Falcon scoring concluded in the 80th minute, as sophomore defender Victoria Carter (La Mirada HS) received a crossing pass and headed the ball to sophomore midfielder Julissa Castaneda (San Pedro HS), who one-timed the ball into the far post. The Hawks finally scored on freshman goalkeeper Maria Santoyo (Universidad de Guadalajara HS) in the 82nd minute on a header by Crystal Vega. On the day, Santoyo made four saves.
