They spent the first five weeks of the season on the road and posted a 9-0-1 record heading into their first home contest against Long Beach City College in a South Coast Conference game on Tuesday. But home was not where the heart was, as the nation's #3-ranked Falcons dropped a 2-1 decision to fall to 4-1-0 in conference play, while the Vikings improved to 1-1-3 in the SCC. The team will get another shot at picking up a win at home when they host Pasadena City at 4:00 p.m. on Friday.
Early on, it appeared as though Cerritos would take a lead, but sophomore Gaby Zamarripa (Artesia HS) missed on a point blank scoring opportunity, as Jeanette DeAnda came away with a huge save. Not long after that, DeAnda charged out of the goal to try and cut down a loose ball, but missed on her clearing attempt. Freshman Jasmine Cornejo (Artesia HS) took a swipe at the ball, but could not find the open net. One of the biggest omissions from the game was sophomore Lauren Nanez (La Mirada HS), who is out of commission due to an injury.
That could not be said for DeAnda, who came across the field to take a direct kick after freshman Jazmin Aguas (San Pasqual HS) was called for a hand ball in the box. DeAnda calmly drilled a shot into the upper right corner of the net to beat freshman Maria Santoyo (Universidad de Guadalajara HS) for a 1-0 Viking lead in the 15th minute.
The lead became a 2-0 disadvantage for the Falcons after they were unable to maintain control of the ball near midfield. LBCC gained the ball and Brooke Denton fed former Cerritos player Rocio Hernandez, whose shot deflected off the hands of Santoyo and into the net in the 61st minute.
For the majority of the game, the Falcons had complete control of the tempo, but was just a pass or two away from a high percentage shot. The LBCC defense did a solid job of intercepting dangerous passes deep in their zone and held off all attempts by Cerritos. With time running out, freshman Claudia Ibarra (Universidad de Guadalara HS) sent a corner kick in front of the net, where Cornejo was there to knock the ball in for a goal.
That goal came on the heels of Hernandez missing a penalty kick in the 85th minute, which seemed to spark the Falcons. Then, in extra time, Ibarra saw her shot hit the cross bar, while Aguas also had a hard shot on DeAnda, who made her 11th save as time expired.
